What happens if I try to swap more than the quoted maximum

The swap will fail. The exchange will reject your transaction at the point of submission, and you will not lose any funds - but you will also not receive any tokens. The system simply refuses to execute a trade that exceeds its pre-set maximum, because doing so would produce a rate worse than what was quoted, or might not be fillable at all from available liquidity.

You send from your own wallet straight to the exchanger — nothing to connect, no account, and you stay on this page throughout. Rates are indicative until a swap is opened.

The swap is carried out by an independent exchanger and the deposit address above is theirs. catsylvestertoken.xyz never holds, receives or controls your funds, has no key to that address, and earns a referral commission. Opening a swap sends your receiving address, IP, browser and timezone to the exchanger for their compliance checks; we store none of it. Check their terms, fees and country restrictions before sending anything.

Why the exchange enforces a hard cap

Every swap quote is computed against a snapshot of current liquidity on the decentralized exchanges that the platform routes through. That snapshot includes an order book depth or a liquidity pool's reserves. The quoted maximum is the largest amount for which the platform can guarantee the displayed rate, given those reserves. If you try to send more, the platform has two options: refuse the trade, or execute it at a rate that slides further than what you saw. Most platforms choose refusal. A refusal is clean; a sliding execution invites disputes about front-running or unfair pricing.

What happens at the technical level

When you hit "swap" for an amount above the maximum, the platform's smart contract or backend checks the input against its stored limit. If the limit is exceeded, the contract reverts - meaning all state changes are undone. Your wallet will show a failed transaction (and you will have paid network gas fees for the attempt, unless the platform uses a gasless relay). On centralized exchanges that operate the same page, the API simply returns an error code, and no order is placed.

The relationship to market impact

The hub page for this set, "When swap size moves the market rate," explains why the maximum exists at all. The core reason is that every trade, beyond a trivial size, moves the price against the trader. A quoted maximum is the platform's best estimate of the largest trade that can be filled without causing a rate change larger than a few basis points from the quote. If you try to exceed it, the platform is effectively telling you that your trade would move the market enough to make the quoted price invalid.

What you can do instead

A note on fixed-rate swaps

Some platforms offer a "fixed-rate" or "guaranteed rate" option, which may allow a larger swap by locking the rate for a brief window. Those are covered in "What does a fixed-rate swap really cost and when is it worth using." But even fixed-rate swaps have a maximum - usually set by the liquidity available on the platform's own reserves, not by the public order books.

The bottom line

If you exceed the quoted maximum, the trade simply does not happen. No funds leave your wallet except the gas fee for the failed attempt. The maximum is not a suggestion; it is a hard boundary. Check it before you confirm.
